Journalism
The Yellow Jacket Times
As a senior in college, this is my sixth year writing for journalism. For Allen University, this is my fourth year, with my first two years of journalism starting off in high school. For the first three years in college, I participated in writing for Allen University's school newspaper, The Yellow Jacket Times. The articles I wrote, particularly during my freshman year, was of the arts since at the time I was active in spoken word poetry.
During my Junior year of college, I took a journalism class to learn in depth of being a journalist. During this class, we learned the process of writing an article which was an inverted pyramid of storytelling based on actual events. During my time taking the journalism class, we've written an article and developed a Wikipedia page of John McCray, who was a journalist for the Lighthouse and Informer. We were the only students to work on this page. For this class, I not only learned the proper way to write an article, but I also developed communication skills so my articles wouldn't be biased for. Not many undergraduates have the opportunity to experience journalism since the school newspaper is now scarce. I am just grateful to have been a part of the AU Yellow Jacket Times.

AU Yellow Jacket News
The AU Yellow Jacket News is a part of Allen’s Office of Institution of Advancement to inform students and alumni of what's going on around campus. Instead of simply developing articles around campus, the Yellow Jacket News highlights Allen University's alumni spotlight the note from the President, campus and historical events, and funding projects from Title III. Each article provides either research of the school's history or highlights important events happening in and out of campus that revolves around Allen University.
While writing for the AU Yellow Jacket News for the Spring Semester of 2017, I was an intern under the Office of Institution of Advancement (Title III) for the Communication Internship course. So far my experiences with Title III have helped me with my communication skills and have given me an insider of the work force. I love how I am able to gain the experience of working in an office setting helping with forms of funding for the school. I believe my work with Title III will expose me to the workforce after graduation and have brought me more experience in journalism, which will translate well into a career in writing.
More than anything, I have enjoyed working under Title III as a writer for the Yellow Jacket News. Each staff member brings positive vibes inside the office that makes the work environment positive through motivation, compliments, and warm welcoming. It is a unique and wonderful experience to be surrounded by staff who enjoy working with students.
